Fundraiser aids cat rescue group

The Palmerton Cat Project, a cat rescue organization, held its second basket Raffle, soup sale, and vendor event this Saturday, at the Aquashicola Fire Company from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Cat Project is an organization working to spay/neuter feral cat colonies and get kittens and abandoned cats adopted.

Now in its second year, the event had 75 raffle items offered, and 15 vendors were selling their various products. For sale were wood crafts, wreaths, baked goods, dog and cat treats and toys, Pampered Chef, ornaments and signs, charcuterie cheeseboards, jewelry, snow globes, crochet and macramé items, laser engraved items, and Sleepy Cat Urban Winery.

Cat Project President and Vice President, Barbara Greenzweig and Stacy Goldberg, respectively, said they made a wish list of items they wanted to see donated at the event, and the list was filled. These items are the most needed, including food, paper products, and kitty litter.

Originally formed in 2014, the Palmerton Cat Project became a 501C3 in 2017. “So far in 2025, we’ve rescued about 80 cats and kittens. We’ve worked with 50 cat colony caretakers who foster these cats and kittens until they can find homes,” Greenzweig said.

The event included a 50/50 drawing, and newly designed Cat Project T-shirts were also available for sale.

The soup sale was a big hit, with most of the to-go containers of New England clam chowder, chili, lobster bisque, chicken noodle, ham and bean, beef stew, Italian wedding, taco, and cream of broccoli selling out before the afternoon.

Organization supporter Dave Matsinko, who has a cat colony of eight, provided musical entertainment by playing guitar and singing for event attendees at the fundraiser.

All proceeds from Cat Project-related sales went to the organization. Greenzweig added that the vast majority of expenses the organization raises funds for are allocated to medical costs. These medical procedures include spaying and neutering, with one cat requiring an amputation, and the other losing an eye.

Both cats are healthy and in loving homes, but many cats and kittens are still looking for their lifetime owners. Cats and kittens that are up for adoption can be found on the Cat Project’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/PalmertonCatProject.

Greenzweig added that the Cat Project is in the process of building a website, but those who are interested in getting involved with the organization can send an email to palmertoncatproject@gmail.com.
