CYO spelling bee winners announced

The CYO District 5 Spelling Bee for grades 6 to 8 was held Oct. 9 at St. John Neumann Regional School in Palmerton.

The Rev. Michael Mullins, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Palmerton, gave the opening prayer.

Phil Liszka, District 5 CYO commissioner for the Diocese of Allentown, offered the opening remarks.

Judges for the event were Carolyn Gowin, Corinna Wehr and Jennifer Bates.

The award medals were purchased from Delrose Awards.

The winners were:

Grade 6

First place — Wyatt Morris, St. Jerome Regional School (SJRS)

Second place — Joshua Zawisza, St. Ambrose Parish, SJRS

Third place — Racquel Kondertavage, SJRS

Honorable mention — Jackson Nothstein, SJRS

Grade 7

First place — Nicholas Zawisza. St. Ambrose Parish, SJRS

Second place — Aiden Barrett, St. Richard Parish, SJRS

Grade 8

First place — Addison Engleman, St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, SJRS

Second place — Lillian Gallagher, St. Joseph of the Panther Valley Parish, SJRS

The winners will compete at the Diocesan Spelling Bee for Grades 6 to 8 on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul Parish Hall, 307 Coal St., Lehighton.

New this year will be a District 5 Spelling Bee for grades 3 to 5 to be held Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul.
