The Shoe Department to open soon Carbon Plaza center in transition
A store that sells name brand shoes for the entire family will soon open at a Carbon County shopping mall.
Lettering has been completed on the outside facade, and a sign that states “Shoe Dept. Coming Soon” is posted out front of a space at the Carbon Plaza Mall at 1241 Blakeslee Blvd. Dr. E. Lehighton.
Victor Kelly, executive vice president of Larken Associates, which owns the Carbon Plaza Mall, said Thursday they don’t know when they’re going to open.
In January, signs were posted on a window at a space inside the Carbon Plaza stating that the Shoe Department was coming soon.
A now hiring sign appeared on the window of the space at that time, and encouraged people to fill out application or inquire about open positions.
The business will be located next to longtime tenant Pizza Como USA.
The mall is in the midst of a makeover.
Nino Caruso, who ran Pizza Como USA inside the Carbon Plaza Mall, purchased the former Boulevard Drive-In and Family Restaurant at 59 Blakeslee Blvd. Dr. E. The popular Boulevard abruptly shuttered its doors in September 2024.
Pizza Como USA will eventually be moving to the former Boulevard Drive-In site and also opened Nonna’s Ice Cream. Nonna’s Ice Cream opened in July and has the traditional Harleman family menu with chicken barbecue, hamburger barbecue, and hot dogs, and also serve Leiby’s and Sweet Summits hard ice cream.
The Boulevard had been open since the 1950s.
The owners posted on Facebook that, due to COVID-19 and the PennDOT 443 road project, they were no longer able to stay open.
Fred and Donna Kemfort had managed the store up until its closure.
In May, Chiu Kwan Kitchen, at 1241 Blakeslee Blvd. Dr. E. Suite 8, Lehighton, announced its permanent closure due to the expiration of its lease.
Kelly said Thursday they did lease the former Chinese restaurant to a group, but did not name the group.
Big Lots, located in the plaza complex, reopened in July under new ownership.
Marshalls store opened in August in the spot where the former Mahoning Cinema was located.
Starbucks opened as a stand-alone in the complex, and First Commonwealth Credit Union in the spot where the Country Harmony health food store was located.
