Volunteers provide blankets, lunch

Those less fortunate were able to get a leg up on the cold weather — and a full belly — thanks to a local group that gives back to the community.

The Nuttin But Luv Familia provided lunch and blankets to the homeless on Friday at the pavilion on the D&L Trail in Lehighton.

The organization also planned to donate 20 blankets to Peaceful Knights.

Lu Daddy, president of The Nuttin But Luv Familia local organization, said the group is committed to giving back to the community.

“We’ve been out here the past couple of weeks walking the river,” Lu Daddy said. “We do this all winter long; we try to help the community.”

Lu Daddy said Heather Glen Senior Living in Allentown donated the blankets to the organization.

He said other items that were available to the homeless included toiletries, makeup, clothes and thermal blankets, and added that deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes were on the way.

Doug Edwards, for one, said he was grateful to The Nuttin But Luv Familia organization after he received two blankets and a bagged lunch.

“It means a lot to homeless people having human body comfort to be able to sleep without shivering; which is not just healthy for the body, but also for the mind,” Edwards said. “Being able to stay warm is a godsend.”

Edwards said that while food is always appreciated, he wished that those who are kind enough to drop off canned foods and the like would also provide a pop top or a can opener, as well as utensils, paper plates and napkins.

During the winter, he said bug spray would be extremely useful to keep the mosquitos off as well.

“Talk to Boy Scout and Girl Scout leaders and ask them what they forgot to take with on that first weekend camping,” Edwards said.

He said the Trinity Lutheran Church (food drive), along with Saints Peter and Paul Church (a facility to shower), have been most helpful.

“No one chooses to live in the woods,” said Edwards, who noted that he assists a disabled man and if he sees anyone in need, he offers to help. “Many of us are here through no fault of our own.”

Edwards added that he relishes the opportunity to help others.

“Give us a reason to help out; it helps us, it preoccupies us,” he said. “We feel better about ourselves, and we feel better that we benefited someone who would not be able to do it themselves.”

Lu Daddy said items such as clothing, hats, gloves, toiletry products, toothpaste and toothbrushes, chips, pretzels, sandwiches and water are all being accepted.

He said anyone who wishes to donate may email nuttinbutluvfamilia@gmail.com, or call 484-767-8788.
