Library in Weatherly expands, to hold open house Nov. 1
The Weatherly Area Community Library has two new additions.
First, the library now has a room where there are hundreds of books for sale. There are shelves of books, plus more spread out over several tables, separated by genre, which include fiction, nonfiction, some cook books, science fiction, mystery, Amish, juvenile, children’s books.
In addition to the books, there are puzzles, DVDs and CDs.
“The sale room will be open during normal library hours,” said Sharon Shorr, a member of the library board and a volunteer. “The public has been amazing in donating books to us. We sold a lot of books yesterday (Friday), and we received more donations to sell.”
The library is always accepting books for its sale room. People are asked that such donations be brought into the library during regular hours; the book drop is only for people returning books that they had checked out from the library.
The second addition to the library is a newly renovated public room that features a conference table and chairs, new flooring and paint, several donated books shelves, and several computers and tables that the public will be able to use. The library offers internet access.
“Some people don’t have computers,” volunteer Barbara Wagner said. “They can come here and use them. We received grant money from the Schiavo foundation. Some of the new shelves came from the school when it closed, and from the Pocono Mountain Library when they were redoing their library.”
The Pasco L. Schiavo Fund of The Luzerne Foundation donates money for educational and humanitarian causes within the boundaries of the Weatherly Area School District and the Hazleton Area School District. The library received a grant of at least $10,000. Schiavo’s name is emblazoned on the wall of the public room.
The Weatherly Area Community Library will hold an open house on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon to officially dedicate the new room, and to celebrate the library’s 30th anniversary, which includes 10 years at its current location.
The library got its start at a local Presbyterian Church, which allowed it to use the church’s social hall for about a year.
Then, in 1995, the library moved into a former candy store. The books were moved via human chain, handing the entire contents of the library from one person to the next.
In 2015, the library opened in its current location at 1518 Brenkman Drive, the site of a former bowling alley. Patrons can still see bowling alley flooring under the books shelves.
Library hours are 6-8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays; 1:30-5:30 p.m. Wednesdays; 3-5 p.m. Thursdays; 9 a.m. to noon Fridays; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
