Lehighton tree commission plants in parks

The Lehighton Shade Tree Commission planted new trees Tuesday in Lehighton’s upper and lower parks.

Judy Wingert, president, said several memorial trees were replaced.

“They were all bad, breaking off, rotted,” Wingert said. “I’m excited; I love trees.”

Wingert said a ginko tree would replace a Maple tree that had been removed in the Upper Park, while one maple and four sycamores were scheduled to be planted by the fountain in the Lower Park.”

“It’s sad to see the bad trees go,” she said. “But these will grow.”

Wingert said Tall Timbers Nursery Landscape Design & Construction, of Allentown, was in charge of the work.

“It’s between us (Lehighton Shade Tree Commission) and the borough,” she said. “We’re using the money they (the borough) allocated to the Shade Tree Commission.”

Wingert shared the Lehighton Shade Tree Commission’s next objective.

“Our future plans are to plant trees around the Lehighton Recreation Center,” she said. “Every year, we try and plant in the spring and fall.”

In honor of Arbor Day in April, the Lehighton Shade Tree Commission planted four trees; three at the Lehighton Recreation Center and one at the bypass. Mulch was added to the trees along the D&L Trail and the Lehighton cemetery.
