Wreckers sweep Jr. High league xc crowns
The Weatherly boys and girls junior high cross country teams both took first place at the Schuylkill League Junior High championships, held on Oct. 11 at Blue Mountain High School.
The Wrecker girls, led by the first-place finish of Mikayla Pugh, easily earned the title by outscoring Blue Mountain and Pottsville — which tied for second — 28-66.
Pugh crossed the finish line in 10:02, which was 16 seconds faster than runner-up Callie Macknis of North Schuylkill. Weatherly’s Mikayla Kuntz took third in a time of 10:20.
Other Wreckers who placed in the top 20 to help earn the championship included Noelle Ramberan (12th) and Emma Moyer (15th).
Tamaqua’s Peyton O’Brien had a strong run, taking fifth in the race while teammate Aubrey Jones ended in 11th.
In the boys competition, four Weatherly runners finished in the top-20. Ryley Jacoby led the way with an eighth place, and Stephen Delman crossed right behind him in ninth. That helped the Wreckers end with a score of 30, just edging out Tamaqua (38) and North Schuylkill (38).
Tyler Nelson aided the Weatherly cause by placing 12th, with Evan Janiec taking 17th.
Tamaqua’s Jackson Koneshusky earned the top finish among area boys, earning second. His time of 9:20 was just one second behind the winner — Connor Evans of Schuylkill Haven.
The Raiders also received a seventh-place finish from Jack Birdsall, while Isaiah Steencken ended 18th.
