Tamaqua Hunger Campaign collects food for the community
Tamaqua Hunger Campaign volunteers collected 86 “Feed A Family” bags and more than $1,000 in donations at Boyer’s Market in Tamaqua on Tuesday.
The donations were quickly turned into cases of food that, along with the bags, filled the beds of two pickup trucks. All that food is headed to Tamaqua’s four community food pantries at American Primitive Methodist Church, Stokes Ministries, Trinity United Church of Christ and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The volunteers will return to Boyer’s from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday for the second and final “Feed A Family” bag day at the Cedar Street store.
Shoppers, who would like to help, have the option of either purchasing a bag of groceries that contains more food than its purchase price, buy and donate a few canned or dry good items or make a cash donation with the campaign volunteers.
“Feed A Family” is part of the monthlong Tamaqua Community Hunger Campaign, which seeks to raise awareness about food insecurity issues in the community and help support the town’s four food pantries.
Last year, the campaign raised $18,000 and collected 125 bags and boxes of food, which was distributed to the four pantries based on the number of families and individuals each serve.
The hunger campaign is a project of the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network, a nonprofit organization of lay members of area churches that operates under the umbrella of the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership.
