Walnutport Canal Days offer historic flair & more this weekend
Complete with crafters/artisans, period reenactors and historic demonstrations, Walnutport Canal Days offer a dose of nostalgia from yesteryear.
A wide variety of foods by local nonprofits will also be a part of the second annual Walnutport Canal Days during its two-day run this weekend.
Presented by the Slatington Lions, Lehigh Township Lions and Lioness Clubs and Walnutport Canal Association, the event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Entertainment on Saturday will consist of Boondock Barons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Prime Cuts from 3 to 6 p.m.
Sunday’s entertainment will feature Steel Creek from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Swing Time Dolls from 3 to 6 p.m.
There will also be a basket raffle, hay wagon rides, Kids Corner, Locktender’s House and Museum, a wide variety of foods from local nonprofits, local craft/vendors, demonstrations, photo ops, Petting Zoo, balloon artist, face painting, costumed characters, pumpkin decorating and more.
Michael Frohnheiser, a member of the Lehigh Township Lions Club, explained the objective of the event.
“The overall goal is for families to come out and enjoy an affordable day out with good food, free entertainment, beautiful scenic views, and social gatherings with friends, families and neighbors,” Frohnheiser said.
“We could not have asked for nicer weather last year, and we put the order into Mother Nature for a repeat performance this year.”
Frohnheiser said the Lehigh Township Lions, Lehigh Township Lioness Lions, Slatington Lions and Walnutport Canal Association all hope to see everyone out and about this weekend.
“We are very thankful for all the support to make Canal Days a success,” he said. “It truly is a community effort and one that showcases the beauty of Walnutport.”
The 42nd annual Walnutport Canal Festival was held in October 2023, and was to have marked the final year for the event. But the area Lions Clubs stepped up to keep the tradition going, just with a new look and a new name.
