Mauch Chunk alumni presented a petition to the Jim Thorpe Area School District Board of Directors seeking to have the district’s junior high school named in memory of T.O. Mitman.
Mitman was a former principal and music teacher at Mauch Chunk High School who went on to become superintendent of the district. He passed away several years ago.
The petition, accompanied by 5-1/2 sheets filled with the names of alumni, stated, in part, “Anyone who attended Mauch Chunk High School knows Mr. Mitman was a powerful presence and a dedicated educator for many, many years. He was an unselfish, caring man who gave his whole life to our schools.”
The petition was referred to the board’s building committee for consideration.
