October 13, 1973 — Mike Heintzelman throws a touchdown on offense and intercepts two passes on defense to help Northwestern earn a 22-6 victory over visiting Jim Thorpe. The Olympians actually take the early lead in the second quarter when Keith Pry recovers a blocked punt in the end zone. The Tigers, coached by Joe Czutno, go ahead for good later in the period when Mark Bricker picks off a pass and Mike Weber carries three straight times to reach the end zone. Heintzelman connects with Dave Oswald on a 16-yard scoring toss in the third frame to extend the margin, while Weber adds another tally — on a 3-yard run — in the fourth for insurance.
