Weatherly schools cut spending due to budget impasse

The lack of a budget in Pennsylvania has gone on now for more than 100 days. Schools around the state have had to take out loans, cut spending and take whatever measures they can to help pay the bills.

The Weatherly Area School Board this week approved a motion to withhold payments to charter schools and cyber schools.

Weatherly provides money for six such schools. The cost-cutting measure will stay in effect until the state passes a budget.

Another motion to approve the purchase of a 2026 Ford F-250 four-wheel drive truck with plow and salt spreader failed, with no one voting for the purchase.

The cost would be $64,703.80, a state bid, from KPN PFVT Motors (Peoria Ford). The failure to approve the action was due to needing to cut back on spending.

“The current dump truck will not pass inspection when it comes due in March,” according to Edward Rarick, business manager and board secretary. “We will still be able to use it this winter.”

The board hopes to again address the purchase of a new truck at a later meeting, following the passing of the state budget.

New superintendent

The school board will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday to name the new superintendent.

Daniel Malloy, the current superintendent, accepted a position as superintendent of the Hanover Area School District. His last day will be Nov. 11, or upon release from Weatherly.

The board held second interviews on Tuesday, and have chosen one of the applicants.

The meeting will be in the middle school’s LGI room.

Students of the month

The school board recognized the students of the month for September.

Senior of the Month is Abigail Weston.
