Palmerton Library holding luminaria fundraiser

It’s time to spread the light throughout Palmerton.

The Lights for the Library fundraiser at the Palmerton Area Library aims to do just that.

Christine DeSousa, library director, said the fundraiser was derived from communities, such as Bethlehem and Allentown, which do luminaria projects during the Christmas season.

“We thought it would be a beautiful addition to somehow coincide with Christmas in the Park,” DeSousa said. “The idea is we would be setting the light of the season from the park all the way out to everybody’s homes.”

DeSousa said the objective is for people to buy the luminarias and put them at their businesses or at their homes.

“We think this would be another effort to do something to spread the light even more in our community,” she said. “The response I have seen is everybody thinks it is a fantastic idea.”

DeSousa noted that funds raised through the initiative would be used toward the library’s operations.

“This is just to spread more light over the season of lights,” she said. “It’s a way for us to extend more holiday cheer throughout our communities.”

“It also shows which neighbors are supporting the library,” DeSousa said.

Kits are five for $10, or 10 for $20, and may be purchased at the Palmerton Area Library, 402 Delaware Ave.

Those who do purchase the luminarias are encouraged to light them at dusk on Dec. 6.

Anyone interested may call the library at 610-826-3424.
