Northern Lehigh School District does not want to hire Crossing Guards and they shouldn’t have to.
No children should have to walk that far to school anymore. The uptown Slatington and Walnutport children must walk up the steep Center Street Hill. This must be especially hard in the winter. I’m sure one bus could be used for both areas. Their parents pay high school taxes and should be assured their children get to school safely.
When I was in High School in the 70s, most families had only one car. The majority of these kids had to walk. We couldn’t wear pants or boots so they had to carry extra clothes along. They came in very wet and cold.
One of my friends quit school at 16 and went to work. She couldn’t stand the walk anymore. Is this the way we educate our children?
