Letter to the editor: I support justices Maria Battista and Matt Wolford
Most times when there are state or federal judges on the ballot, voters at my voting precinct will ask me “Who shall I vote for?” “I don’t know anything about them.” “Why do we need all these judges?”
Let’s pretend your neighbor allows his dog to constantly relieve himself in your yard. After repeatedly asking your neighbor to control his dog, you file a lawsuit against him. A Carbon County judge finds him not guilty. You appeal it to a higher court. This being a civil matter, likely it will go to the PA Superior Court. Maria Battista hopes to be elected to this court in November. Maria has 15 years of experience in criminal, civil, and administrative law. She has been an assistant district attorney. As a commonwealth attorney, she was a hearing examiner where she presided over hundreds of cases including for the Department of Corrections. She is a former employee of the U.S. Department of the Navy and is qualified for the position.
A different scenario. After living in your rural home 25 years, construction is increasing in your neighborhood. To address a complaint from your neighbor, PennDOT has installed a new drain to control rainwater runoff. However, the drain has caused ditches through your yard. After speaking with PennDOT to no avail, you file suit against PennDOT. A Carbon County judge rules in favor of PennDOT. If you appeal this decision, it will likely be sent to the PA Commonwealth Court, which handles cases involving state and local government.
Matt Wolford is seeking election to this court in November. Matt served as a deputy in the office of the Attorney General and litigated cases before the Commonwealth Court. Matt has been Special Assistant U.S. Attorney. His client base consists of individuals, businesses, and organizations defending against government enforcement actions, environmental cleanups, real estate transactions of contaminated properties, and denial of claims involving sewage permitting, stormwater management, air quality matters, and regulatory issues involving gas and oil companies. He is qualified for the position.
Please vote for Maria Battista and Matt Wolford on Nov. 4.
