Organizers plan jam-packed Tamaqua Heritage Festival

Organizers of the upcoming Tamaqua Heritage Festival promise a variety of vendors, food offerings and entertainment.

They’re also remaining positive, and planning for a warm and sunny day for the event on Sunday.

“First and foremost, I expect the weather to cooperate this time. However, I’m still trying to figure out how to do that,” said Justin Bailey, committee member for the Tamaqua Odd Fellows.

When the Odd Fellows took over hosting the Tamaqua SummerFest and Heritage Festival from the Tamaqua Historical Society this year, Mother Nature delivered rain and chilly temperatures for the June SummerFest.

But that didn’t dampen the atmosphere, Bailey recalled.

“Despite the less than stellar weather, we were packed with good food and lots of craft vendors,” he said. “This Heritage Fest will be just the same.”

The 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. multi-block street fair will be entirely along South Railroad Street in downtown Tamaqua.

Bailey said there will be food, music, crafts, vendors and community spirit — and a celebration of the heart and heritage of Tamaqua.

“We have the street packed to capacity again with good food and a wide array of vendors,” Bailey said.

Carriages pulled by Belgium draft horses from Leiby’s Carriage Service will be at the Wells Fargo Bank on West Broad Street.

Polka Joe Manjack from WMGH/Magic 105.5 FM will broadcast the “Magic Polka Machine” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and local musicians will perform between 1 and 5 p.m.

“We will be featuring JackAzz distillery this year, as well as many more and new vendors,” Bailey said.

The Odd Fellows Harmony Lodge will have a special offering — fresh pressed apple cider. The autumn beverage has been a favorite at previous festivals.

“You’ll see the same things that you liked in the past, plus newer spaces added to the street,” Bailey said.

The Tamaqua Historical Society Museum at 118 W. Broad St. will be open, as will the Hegarty Blacksmith Shop on Hegarty Avenue.

While the Reading & Northern passenger trains won’t run, the Tamaqua Anthracite Railroad Club will show off its large display from its 139 W. Broad St. home.

The Odd Fellows lodge is still open to receiving vendors. Anyone interested or seeking more information, may contact 570-668-4569 or harmony86ioof@yahoo.com.
