‘Ride for Ronny’ raises money for Tamaqua cancer patient

The area community turned out Saturday in a show of support for a local man battling lung cancer.

Hundreds filed into the social hall of New England Valley Fire Company in the early afternoon for a large basket raffle to support Tamaqua businessman and community volunteer Ronny Ziegler, along with his wife and two children.

At the same time, 300 more took part in a 100-mile car and motorcycle run through the countryside.

Afterward, entertainment was provided by various bands and individuals, DJ Plum Crazy Kerry Hamm, Waiting for Eyes, Tom Bartasavage, and Ricky and the Ricardos.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of Saturday’s event,” said Jenny Ziegler Fegley.

“The support from our small town community for my brother and his family was overwhelming.

“We appreciate the efforts of every individual who volunteered their time, made donations, contributed baskets, or offered love and support.

“The prizes were exceptional, the food trucks were excellent, and the bands performed admirably.”

Fegley said the family is grateful for the devotion shown by New England Valley Fire Company.

“Without them and all they did for us, the event would not have been possible and successful. They worked with us through every turn.

I am humbled and love you all and our town! Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts!”

Ziegler wasn’t sure his condition would permit him to take part in the run, but was ultimately able to participate seated in a car.

In June, Ziegler was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, the same disease that took the life of his father nearly 26 years ago.
