Raising money to serve the local community
Family Promise of Carbon County held a rummage sale on Saturday at their Nesquehoing facility at 140 W. Mill St.
The sale included a wide variety of items, such as clothing, shoes, furniture, dishware, home decor, small kitchen appliances, toys and games, and other items.
Visitors could get a whole box or bag full of clothing for $5. There were also oval rugs, dining room chairs, Christmas decorations, photo albums, toaster ovens and microwaves, and so much more.
In addition to helping clear some space in the building, the money raised will go toward children’s programs that Family Promise offers.
“It’s important that children get to be children, and we want them to have some fun,” Cathy Lamm, executive director, said.
An example of a children’s event was a trip to a zoo. Future events might include going to Knoebel’s Amusement Resort or a pumpkin patch.
Family Promise of Carbon County’s mission is “to offer families experiencing homelessness in Carbon County temporary shelter, meals, and a safe place to sleep.
“We empower families to use support networks to become self-sustaining and secure permanent housing within 90 days.”
Last year, Family Promise served 127 people with aid in housing, food, and support.
This year, so far, they have helped 130 people.
Family Promise also works with other area organizations to help the people get the resources and help that they need.
One goal that Family Promise has is to help erase the stigma that comes with people dealing with low or no income.
“Many of the people we help have work and an income,” Lamm explained, “and they are very close to losing their homes. We try to help them out of that difficult situation.”
