No one injured in Lehighton apartment fire

No one was injured following an apartment fire Saturday afternoon in Lehighton.

Borough fire Chief Patrick Mriss said firefighters responded just before 5 p.m. to an apartment building at 132 N. First St.

Mriss said that upon arrival, firefighters encountered smoke coming from the third floor of the roof area.

He said the fire began on the third floor, with one apartment affected by fire, and others by smoke and water.

Mriss said several occupants were able to get out safely.

He said the apartment building is uninhabitable, and all utilities have been disconnected.

Mriss noted that the Red Cross was on scene.

He said it took firefighters about 90 minutes to get the fire under control.

Mriss said the cause is unknown, and under investigation by a state police fire marshal.

He said firefighters remained on scene for about three hours.

Mriss said also assisting at the scene were the Franklin Township Fire Department, Mahoning Valley Fire Department, and Panther Valley RIT.

“This is the start of Fire Prevention Week,” Mriss said. “Make sure you’re changing your batteries on your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and replace if needed.”
