Bears drop ES North
DINGMANS FERRY — Pleasant Valley’s strength comes in its numbers — and in the way those numbers work for one another.
Seven different Bears scored touchdowns in a 56-14 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win at East Stroudsburg North on Friday, a dominant display of balance, depth and selflessness that spoiled the Timberwolves’ homecoming.
“I mean it was a great night,” junior receiver William Breuer said. “We spread the ball around a lot — we gave everybody touches. I think maybe four of our skill positions got touchdowns, even one of our linemen. So we spread the ball around a lot. It was a great win. We had fun doing it.”
For Breuer, whose primary job in the Bears’ (3-4) triple-option offense is blocking, success is about so much more than just catches and stats.
“My job goes beyond just being a pass catcher,” he said. “I have so much more in our offense than just catching passes.”
Senior running back Niko Payan echoed that team-first mentality.
“Being part of a running offense is fun,” Payan said. “I get the ball, I get to score touchdowns, and I see my friends score touchdowns. It’s a nice feeling. Playing back in my hometown (after returning to the Pleasant Valley School District) is just a different level. I’m having so much fun out here.”
That sense of chemistry carried onto the field from start to finish.
Junior Jacob George opened the scoring with a 1-yard run in the first quarter. On the first play of the second, fellow junior Chris Ward sprinted 52 yards to make it 14-0.
North’s (0-7) Wayne King answered with a 73-yard run to cut the deficit to 14-6 with 9:36 left in the half, but the Bears stormed back — and didn’t stop there.
Senior quarterback Jaxson Haines connected with Ward for a 63-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 21-6. Haines later found Breuer on an 18-yard strike, and Payan capped a 28-point quarter with a 32-yard touchdown run to make it 35-6 at halftime.
It was a complete turnaround from last season, when Pleasant Valley dropped a 21-20 heartbreaker to the Timberwolves in Brodheadsville after King’s two-point conversion with 17.1 seconds remaining.
This time, there would be no late drama.
Senior Marcelus Solt found room to run on several occasions Friday, and scored on an 8-yard run to push the margin to 42-6 and trigger the mercy rule with 8:53 left in the third. King connected with Kendrick Sympson for a 50-yard touchdown and ran in the conversion to make it 42-14, but the Bears kept coming.
Lineman Brad Serfass scored one of the night’s most celebrated touchdowns when he plunged in from a yard out with 11 seconds left in the third. Tyler Brown closed the scoring on a 10-yard run after Pleasant Valley recovered a fumble.
Bears’ head coach Blaec Saeger — who also teaches at North — said his team’s togetherness has been the key.
“It’s a very selfless team,” Saeger said. “They’re fun to coach. They like working hard for each other. Our perimeter blocking has been fantastic — probably the number one thing that’s improved from last year to this year. There’s no selfishness there. They want their buddy to get in the end zone, and they really block for each other well.”
IRON SHARPENS IRON … Saeger said that attitude, along with the Bears’ balance, has allowed them to compete through a demanding schedule. Pleasant Valley’s four losses have come against some of the area’s premier programs — Governor Mifflin, Exeter, Parkland and Nazareth — while its three wins have been decisive, with a combined margin of 125-27.
“We owe some people some revenge after last year and our kids are playing like it,” Saeger said. “They come in hungry and angry and they played like it.”
RIVALRY GAME … Next week, the Bears will look to carry that momentum and unselfish spirit into the annual Old Oaken Bucket game against rival Pocono Mountain East, which won last year’s meeting 10-7.
“We have a monster one next week for many different reasons,” Saeger said. “It’s more than just Week 8 — there’s district implications, and more importantly, there’s the bucket.”
START TO FINISH … Pleasant Valley came away with touchdowns on all eight of its offensive possessions in the contest.
