Schuylkill Co. hosts nature walks Sunday
A number of events will be held throughout Schuylkill County as part of Walk in Penn’s Woods on Oct. 5.
Walk in Penn’s Woods is a statewide observation on the first Sunday in October to learn about and appreciate forests.
All are invited to attend the free events sponsored by the Schuylkill County Conservancy and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Forestry.
• DCNR service forester Will Thomas will show folks how to identify trees from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Taylorsville Tract parking of the Weiser State Forest near Pitman. Participants will learn to identify Pennsylvania’s most common trees and discover how trees benefit wildlife, water quality and history. For more information, contact Thomas at 570-449-4127.
• A tour of an American chestnut tree plantation will be held from 10:30-11:20 a.m. from 81 Old Mill Road, Pottsville. The road is marked “closed” but travel about a quarter-mile to the site. Attendees will learn how the majestic American chestnut is being restored, explore a plantation of blight-resistant young chestnuts and talk with Steve Zuk, plantation owner and forest steward. For more information, contact Frank at 570-449-4239.
• From noon-1:30 p.m., people can visit the arboretum at the Penn State Schuylkill Campus at 200 University Drive, Schuylkill Haven. Participants should meet at the London Plane trees near the Health and Wellness Center. They’ll see nearly 500 trees including 78 unique species, and learn about tree ecology and benefits. The event is hosted by curator Mary Ann Smith and student guides. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information, contact Frank at 570-449-4239.
• From 2-3:30 p.m., people can visit 254 Red Church Road, Auburn, to learn how to restore land overrun by invasive species. Attendees will also see efforts to cultivate ginseng for sustainability and income, and will meet goats and chickens. The event is hosted by George Maroukis and Heather Wright.
