Passenger injured in turnpike crash

A passenger was injured in a three-vehicle crash at 9:05 p.m. on Sept. 13 at mile marker 87.6 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Penn Forest Township.

State police said Darshawn D. Scott, 30, of Wilkes-Barre, had severe head and facial injuries and was transported by personnel from the Albrightsville Fire Company to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus.

They said the crash occurred as Joshua P. Gushock, 19, of Luzerne, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze northbound when it struck the back of a 2021 Hyundai Tucson operated by John T. Machovec, 60, of East Rockaway, N.Y., causing the Tucson to go off the road and hit an electronic message sign.

Police said the Cruze went out of control and struck a concrete barrier. One of its wheels came off and hit a 2019 Nissan Altima driven by Pedro Cruz IV, 20, of Kingston. Police said Scott was a passenger in the Cruze.

Both the Cruze and Tucson were towed from the scene.

Gushock was cited for careless driving, according to police. All three drivers and a passenger in the Tucson escaped injury.
