Donations being accepted for survivors
A GoFundMe has been set up for a Franklin Township man who lost his four children and companion in a tragic house fire late Tuesday night.
The fundraiser was organized by Nicole Wheelock of Tampa, Florida, who said that on that night, Matthew Wheelock’s world changed forever.
“A devastating house fire took everything from him — his home, his clothes/belongings, and most painfully, his 4 children — Matthias (6), Aiden (5), Nathaniel (1), and Kaylee (14),” Wheelock said. “Their mother, Aida Marrero, also passed away in the fire as well. The pain is indescribable, and we are still trying to understand how to move forward from this unimaginable loss.
“As a family — we are heartbroken, grieving, and overwhelmed. We’re asking for support as Matthew faces a long road ahead.”
Wheelock said donations will help with clothing, housing and essentials, grief counseling, and rebuilding what was lost.
“We are asking for the support of family, friends and the community to give whatever they can to help Matthew rebuild his life. No amount is too small. If you’re unable to donate, please share this campaign and keep Matthew and our family in your prayers.”
Wheelock said Matthew is currently in Tampa staying with his mom.
As of 8 a.m. Friday, $2,805 of the $10,000 goal had been raised.
St. Peter’s Community Resource Center, 177 Main Road, Franklin Township, has offered to be a drop off point for donations for the fire victims.
The group posted on its Facebook page Wednesday night that volunteers from St. Peter’s Community Resource Center will be at the Weissport Crisp Air Festival at 10 a.m. Saturday and will have a donation jar there for monetary donations for the families who suffered the tragedy.
Items that are being accepted include tooth brushes, tooth paste, women’s medium shirts, women’s small pants, women’s shoe size 8, feminine hygiene products, disposable razors, blankets, dog food, cat litter, cat food, men’s XL shirt, men’s XL pants and men’s shoe size 10.5.
P.J. Whelihan’s Pub and Restaurant in Lehighton will host a Community Support Night from 11:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. Oct. 10.
“Earlier this week, a devastating house fire impacted one of our team members, leaving them without a home,” P.J. Whelihan’s Pub & Restaurant posted on its Facebook page. “While our hearts are heavy for the lives lost in the community, we want to rally together to support our teammate during this difficult time.”
P.J. Whelihan’s said it will donate 15% of all sales to help Brianna Smith as they begin to rebuild.
“We are grateful for the strength of this community, and we know that together we can make a difference. Thank you for showing up, supporting, and caring for one of our own.”
