America250PA Carbon County to dedicate bell
“Bells Across Pennsylvania” is an initiative of America250PA, a project to help celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America. It is to commemorate one of the country’s most well-known symbols, the Liberty Bell.
Carbon County will unveil and dedicate its bell on Sunday at noon in the Weissport Borough Park in conjunction with the Crisp Air Festival, which opens tonight.
Each of the 67 counties across Pennsylvania had the opportunity to acquire one of the 3-foot fiberglass bells and decorate it in a fashion that represents their county.
The Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau donated the $10,000 cost of the bell for Carbon County.
Lynn Shupp, owner of Photography by Lynn, led the committee to create the bell. The design is a collage featuring photos and art work submitted by 13 various local artists.
Shupp said the 13 artists represent the 13 original colonies and show varied views of the county.
The bell was painted black to represent the anthracite coal history of the region.
Artists supplied digital images to decorate the bell or Shupp photographed their works and turned them into digital files that represent old fashioned Polaroids.
Jet Signs mounted the images and sealed them so they would withstand the elements.
Once finished, committee members Mark Steber and Keith Jake Boyer transported the bell to Jacob’s United Church of Christ where it is being held until the unveiling.
The quilt placed over the bell until the unveiling is a Quilt of Valor from Bruce and Kathy Frisch. Kathy made the quilt for her husband Bruce.
The celebration will include Posting of the Colors by the Panther Valley High School and JROTC, Angela Nardini singing the national anthem, invocation by Pastor Bob Von Frisch, members of the America250PA Commission, and the Lehighton Band.
The bell will be displayed in the Weissport park until Dec. 31, 2026.
The event is open to the public.
