100-mile ride benefits Tamaqua man who is battling lung cancer
Drivers of cars, SUVs, motorcycles, Jeeps — and even Yugos — are invited to participate in a 100-mile ride to benefit a Tamaqua man battling cancer.
Proceeds from the Oct. 4 “Ride for Ronny” will help Ronny Ziegler, his wife and their two children.
Many know Ziegler, who grew up locally and owned Ziegler’s Auto and Towing.
“He is known around town for his love of cars,” Ronny’s sister Jenny Fegley said. “He is always willing to do anything and everything he can for his friends, family and even strangers.”
But in early June, Ziegler learned that he had lung cancer. His diagnosis was adenocarcinoma — the same disease that claimed the life of his father almost 26 years ago.
“So we were definitely very grateful for the early find,” Fegley said.
In August, surgeons removed the upper left lobe of one of Ziegler’s lungs.
“He has a strong will to get back to himself again and is doing very well,” Fegley said.
Family and friends decided to organize the ride and other activities at the New England Valley Fire Company, 7 Miller Lane, Tamaqua. Registration for the ride begins at 11:30 a.m. from the fire company.
“It is a 100-mile ride we have mapped out, and we will have directions on the day of the event for anyone not local,” Fegley said.
Along the way, there will be stops at bars and restaurants in both Schuylkill and Carbon counties.
“After the ride, the end is back at the New England Valley Fire Company,” she said.
There, there will be a basket auction, prize drawings, 50/50 raffles, bake sale and food trucks. Live entertainment will be provided by DJ Kerry Hamm and the bands Waiting for Eyes and Ricky and the Ricardos.
Fegley said that people do not need to participate in the ride to support Ziegler. They can show up at the fire company for the raffle beginning at 1 p.m., and food and entertainment at 3 p.m.
Ziegler plans to stop by the fire company, and might even participate in the ride if he’s feeling up to it, she said.
Fegley added that bikes, Jeeps, trucks and cars are welcome — and that fellow organizer Sean Coleman will offer $100 to anyone who completes the ride in a Yugo, a car that was discontinued in the early 1990s.
Anyone interested in donating a basket or gift card or helping in any way can contact Fegley at 570-516-5226.
