Several injured in multi motorcycle crash

Several motorcyclists were injured following a multi motorcycle crash Saturday afternoon on Route 443 in Lehighton.

Lehighton Borough Police Cpl. Bruce Broyles said the call originated around 3:40 p.m. in Mahoning Township for a large group of motorcycles driving erratically that ended up by the Sunoco Gas Station in Lehighton.

“There was a collision,” Broyles said. “The driver was trying to brake and lost control of the bike and rear-ended another motorcycle, which caused that motorcycle to go forward and hit another motorcycle.”

Broyles said two people were injured. One was released on site with minor injuries, and the other was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital for a possible concussion and laceration on his left arm.

He added there were anywhere between 200 to 300 motorcyclists who said they were doing an end of summer ride from Lebanon to Allentown.

Broyles said a portion of Route 443 was shut down for between 30 to 40 minutes due to “pretty significant congestion.”

He said no citations were filed.

Broyles said the scene was cleared at 4:45 p.m.

“The motorcyclists were very cordial with us,” he said. “They were helpful in our investigation.”

Broyles said also assisting at the scene were the Franklin Township Police Department, Mahoning Township Police Department, Lehighton Fire Department, Lehighton fire police, and Lehighton Ambulance.
