Rush Twp. wants to lower speed on Quakake road
Rush Township officials plan to work on having the speed limit lowered on Main Street in Quakake.
The road is posted 40 mph in one direction and 15 mph and in another near an area where there’s a sharp, short incline, or bump, near railroad tracks.
Motorists often take the road at too high a speed, hit the bump and crash their vehicles, said resident Gary Smudin.
Even at a slow rate of speed, he told supervisors, the “bump” is dangerous to navigate.
“Someone is going to die there,” Smudin said.
If the speed limit is lowered below 40 mph, the township — and not PennDOT — would be responsible for purchasing and installing signs, Supervisor Robert Leibensperger said.
The township would also have to replace damaged signs, he noted.
“That sign out there on Route 309 by (Route) 54 — that’s a $900 sign” that was recently damaged and had to be replaced by the township, Leibensperger said.
In other words, he said, if the township lowers a speed limit to below 40 mph, “we own the road basically and (are responsible for) enforcement and everything else.”
The board will put the matter on its October agenda, and request that PennDOT considers lowering the speed limit to 25 mph.
“They’ll put it on the agenda next month,” township engineer Bill McMullen of ARRO Consulting said. “There is criteria on when it can be lowered to 35 and when it can be lowered to 25.”
“We’ll have it at the next meeting. We’re working on it,” board Chairman Shawn Gilbert said. “It’s state road so it is a whole different ballgame.”
The board will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 20, instead of Oct. 16.
