Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue holding fundraiser Sunday

The Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue is inviting those with two legs — and their four-legged friends, if they have them — to a fundraising dog walk at the Owl Creek Reservoir in Tamaqua.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, and folks can arrive at any time to walk or just to enjoy the food, tricky tray auction, raffle and other activities.

“There will food vendors and there will also be people selling things like jewelry and other wares,” said Amy Paules, a volunteer with the rescue organization. “Many of them are animal-friendly vendors.”

There’s even a costume contest for pets — dogs, cats and other pets — at 2 p.m. Plus, Ruff Raiders of Tamaqua will provide pet nail trimming for free, and a photo booth will be set up.

“The photo booth will have the backdrop of the lake, and it will be decorated with mums and cornstalks,” Paules said. “You can sit there with your dog or cat and have your photo taken for free, or you can sit by yourself or just have photos taken of your cat or dog.”

As for the walk, Paules noted that people don’t have to stroll with their animals — or walk it at all. It won’t be a race, so people can show up whenever they’d like, she added.

There is a fee, and proceeds from the event benefit the nonprofit, all-volunteer organization.

Paules said that the rescue group is comprised of six volunteers who help strays and other animals in peril.

“It’s been nonstop with cats and dogs since last year,” Paules said.

The group rescues animals from Tamaqua and the surrounding areas. A recent case involved retrieving 60 cats from a home whose owner had passed away.

Volunteers typically house the animals until homes are found for them.

“Because the shelters are full, we are a stray-hold type of kennel,” Paules said. “One dog we have had for over a year because we can’t find him a home.”

The group also traps, then spays or neuters feral cats before returning them to where they were captured.

Veterinarian bills, food and vaccines add up.

“Every dime raised goes to the animals,” Paules said. “No one gets paid. We are 100% volunteers.”

The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, to see some of the animals available for adoption or the items that will be in the basket raffle, visit Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue on Facebook.
