Five area golfers reach D-11 final

GREEN POND — It was a rewarding day for several Times News area golfers, who earned a trip to next Tuesday’s District 11 Golf Tournament championship round at Steel Club in Hellertown.

Taking the first step at the Northampton Country Club in the qualifier round were a pair of Palmerton and Northwestern Lehigh golfers, along with a Pleasant Valley standout.

Northwestern coach Tim Miller was beaming about his two golfers — Cole Dynda and Skylar Kern.

The same could be said for Pleasant Valley’s Steve Krechel and Palmerton’s Alex Knoll.

Knoll’s golfers seem to make it a habit of qualifying yearly at this stage. Joey Solt came in second overall behind Simon Weed of Notre Dame-Green Pond, shooting an 83 to lead the Palmerton contingent. Solt finished four strokes behind Weed, who carded a 79.

Palmerton’s Jason Carrelli just made the cut, finishing 18th with a 90.

Dynda tied for 13th along with Kern, with both shooting rounds of 89.

As for Pleasant Valley’s Drew Patascher, in the Class 3A bracket, he fired a 7-over-par 79 and finished tied for eighth with Northampton’s Andrew Eberts. Taking the top spot in the group was Emmaus’s Kyan DeLong with a 2-over 74.

“Joey Solt played really well, and I’m proud of the way Jason (Carrelli) played today,” Knoll said. “Jason came in battling an injury today, but he battled. Both are going to give it a shot along with Jared Grammes … it’s awesome to have three Palmerton kids get into the (district) tournament.”

The back nine was the front for all golfers. Solt went out with a 41, carding three pars and a birdie on the 12th — a par 4. He also made a birdie on the 7th — a par 5, 492-yard hole.

“I’m happy with my score,” Solt said. “The fairways are pretty tight, and there are a few holes that can get tricky.”

“The hole locations were pretty tough,” Solt said. “The greens are fast, but they’re in pretty good shape.”

Carrelli played through a nagging injury.

“I hurt my elbow,” Carrelli said, noting it had been bothering him for weeks and was reinjured during the round. “I did the best I could fighting through my injury. I hit a tree root today, and (made it) worse.”

Carrelli opened with a 45, carding three pars but also a triple bogey on the 12th — a par 4. He recovered on the course’s second-toughest hole, the 15th — a par 5 measuring 520 yards. He added pars on the 5th and 7th holes down the stretch.

Miller, in his 15th season at Northwestern, was more than pleased with the play of Dynda and Kern.

“Both of those guys helped turn our season around. Last season we finished three wins and eight losses; this season we were 7-4 and Cole and Skylar helped turn us into a winner,” Miller said. “They executed like professionals … they’re some of the better golfers in the league. They came out and played very well.”

Dynda didn’t think it was his best effort.

“I thought I could have had some better shots … some of my problems were more club selection. I thought I could have done a better job choosing. I thought I overthought some shots, too.”

Dynda, who had played the course twice before, shot a 44 going out, with three pars, and on the back nine he carded three pars and a birdie on the next-to-last hole for a 45.

Kern shot a 45 on the front side. He parred the 11th (par 5, 477 yards), birdied the 14th (par 4, 318 yards) and parred the 15th (par 5, 520 yards). He looked strong to open the final nine, with back-to-back pars, and added a par on the 2nd hole (par 5, 554 yards) — the No. 1-rated hole on the course.

“I thought I could have played better,” Kern said. He wasn’t pleased with the final three holes, shooting 6 over after a strong start on the back. “My second shot on par 5s were kind of hurting me. My 9-iron was my best club in my bag.

“The trees made it too tight,” he added with a chuckle about the finishing holes.

Patascher looked sharp to open his round. He ripped off three straight pars, then carded bogeys on the 13th (par 3) and 14th (par 4). He rebounded with a par on the 15th (par 5, 520 yards), then nailed a birdie on the 16th. He added a par on the 17th, before closing the opening nine with a bogey on the 18th.

“I expected him to make it through this round,” PV coach Krechel said of Patascher. “He’s been averaging 76 on the season. He’s been a top player all season long. He’s played well all summer, he’s played in a lot of tournaments.”

Patascher finished with a 38 on the opening nine. He started the back nine with a par, then slipped with three straight bogeys before recovering with three straight pars.

The final two holes were unkind, as he closed with two bogeys for a 41.

COURSE LAYOUT ... “It’s a fair course, the greens are beautiful, the condition is fantastic … for how dry it’s been, it’s beautiful,” Krechel said of Northampton Country Club.

KNOLL ON CARRELLI AND SOLT ... “They both had a really solid year, and this course really fits their game. They’re pretty accurate ball strikers, and this course can cause you issues.”

ADMIRABLE JOB ... “I know they think they didn’t play all that well … but the pressure of it, they did a great job,” Miller said of both Kern and Dynda.
