Weatherly to review job candidates
The Weatherly Area School Board last week voted to approve the resignation of Superintendent Daniel Malloy; although, with regrets.
“We thank you and wish you good luck,” Treasurer William Knepper said to Malloy; a sentiment echoed by other members of the school board.
“I want to thank all of you as well,” Malloy responded. “It’s been a pleasure working with you.”
Malloy accepted a position as superintendent in the Hanover Area School District. He worked in Hanover from 1997 until 2021 when he was hired as superintendent for the Weatherly Area School District.
Knepper, who is also chairman of the Personnel/Policy committee, said, “We have received over 20 applications for the position so far. “We will begin processing them on Oct. 15 and 16, and we’ll go from there. So far, we have about four or five viable candidates that we are looking into.”
Malloy’s last day will be Nov. 11, or upon release from the school district.
Food service
The Nutrition Group, which provides food services for the Weatherly Area School District, provided a spread of Asian-influenced foods and drinks for the school board members, offering a variety of items, such as egg rolls and salads; plus, ice tea, lemonade and water.
The Nutrition Group features “Nutrition Expedition” for the elementary students, while “Take Nutrition Global” is geared toward the high school students. For both programs, students “visit” a new country each month, learn about the food, the culture, and try a dish from that country.
Katrina Harrell, the food service manager for the Weatherly Middle and High Schools, spoke to the Weatherly School Board, offering information on the various activities for the students.
“I want to personally thank you,” Harrell said to the board members. “I had an amazing first year! I wanted to thank you all for making me feel at home.”
Harrell said the hourly cafeteria staff attended a Professional Development Day and Opening Meetings, where staff earned continuing education credits required by the USDA.
The food program finished the 2024/2025 school year with a profit. They were budgeted $56,758 for breakfast, and actual costs were $53,840. For lunch, they were budgeted $67,182; actual costs were $64,448. The À la carte program was budgeted $71,125, and finished with $63,682.
A new feature added for the high school is a coffee bar that is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
