Weissport council discusses speeding, trash increase
Weissport Borough Council on Monday night discussed the situation regarding vehicles traveling well over the speed limit through the borough.
One resident mentioned a dangerous situation on White Street with people speeding while children are getting on a school bus, and passing while the bus is stopped with flashing lights.
“There should be cameras on the bus that record vehicles doing that,” Police Chief Matthew Williams pointed out. “The bus company would then forward that video to the local police.”
It was also mentioned that traffic cuts through Weissport to avoid driving over the McCall Bridge, and goes too fast through the borough.
Council will look for possible solutions for the problem.
The timing of the traffic lights on both ends of the McCall bridge are, at times, far too quick and enough vehicles cannot get through.
Trash collection increase
Council accepted the offer from Casella Waste Systems, the new owners of Tamaqua Transfer, to extend the garbage collection contract for one additional year. The increase and continuation of terms per the original service agreement dated Dec. 20, 2019, will result in a 5% increase in fees.
Railway Street repairs
Council passed a motion to begin the Railway Street project, which involves repairing the street. Some of the larger holes on the street are in the 300 and 400 blocks.
The project is estimated to cost approximately $10,000.
Railway Street runs parallel to White Street, and is between White Street and the D&L Trail.
