Anthony Kowalski, 22, of Saylorsburg, had minor injuries after a two-vehicle crash at 11:17 p.m. July 28 on Interstate 78 in Lower Saucon Township, state police at the Belfast barracks said.

Police said he was transported by personnel from the Dewey Fire Company No. 1 Ambulance to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Fountain Hill.

Police said he was driving a 2007 Cadillac westbound when it struck the rear of a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe operated by Michael Sapio, 68, of Lynbrook, New York, after the latter had slowed down due to traffic. Police said Sapio reported injuries but refused medical treatment at the scene. A passenger in his vehicle was uninjured.

Kowalski fled the scene before arrival of police and emergency personnel but was located a short distance from the scene and was then taken to the hospital, police said.

They said the Cadillac was towed from the scene.

Police said Kowalski is facing charges of driving under the influence and was also cited for failure to drive at a safe speed.
