2 charged in Summit Hill; authorities say fugitive was found hiding in closet

A Summit Hill pair faces charges after Carbon County deputies went to a borough home Wednesday to pick up a woman wanted on a bench warrant.

Cheri Haas, 39, was picked up on a warrant in a theft by unlawful taking case and then charged with flight to avoid apprehension and obstruction of administration of law.

She was jailed in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning in lieu of $25,000 bail. She posted bail on Thursday.

Also arrested was Jason Michell, 45, on charges of hindering apprehension and obstruction of administration of law. He was initially jailed and then released on $25,000 bail on Thursday.

Both have preliminary hearings scheduled for Sept. 24, court records say.

According to arrest papers, deputies went to a home on West White Street just before noon to arrest Haas, and set up a perimeter around the home.

They detected movement inside, giving commands for Haas to exit the home, citing the warrant.

There was no response, court papers said.

Summit Hill police arrived later, and deputies noticed movement in the top floor window of the home. Jason Michell then came down the steps.

Michell gave permission to search the residence, and authorities looked in the basement, where movement was first noticed inside the home, but found no one, court papers said.

Michell then told Sheriff Dan Zeigler that he knew Haas, but she had left the home three hours earlier with her sister and was still with her, court papers said.

When asked by Zeigler, Michell denied that Haas was in the home.

A search was conducted, and Haas was found in a bedroom closet behind blankets and taken into custody.
