A Nescopeck man faces criminal charges after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and then a Nesquehoning police officer last week.
Cole Balliet, 31, of East Third Street, was arraigned by Lansford District Judge Beth Dodson on charges of aggravated assault, two felony counts; strangulation, two felony counts; simple assault; and resisting arrest.
He was committed to the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning in lieu of $85,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
According to court papers, Nesquehoning police responded to a home on West Catawissa Street for a domestic violence call Sept. 2 at 4:50 a.m.
Balliet, who was involved in a physical altercation with his girlfriend, was informed he was being detained and resisted arrest. Balliet ignored officers’ commands and after an intensive struggles was handcuffed, court papers said.
Balliet then kicked Officer Ray Tonkinson several times in the leg, court papers said.
The girlfriend had multiple injuries, including to her neck after being choked multiple times, restricting her breathing, court papers said. Balliet had also placed his hands over her mouth, restricting breathing and preventing her from yelling for help, arrest papers said.
Balliet had also punched her in the ribs and kidney area, slapped her in the face, bit her shoulder and hand, and placed his knee and elbow on her sternum, causing bruising, swelling and bleeding, court papers said.
She was taken to St. Luke’s Miners Campus, Coaldale, for treatment.
