Patriot Day remembrances

• The Carbon County Veterans Affairs office will hold a Patriot Day observance service at 9 a.m. Thursday in Josiah White Park, downtown Jim Thorpe.

The service will remember those who died during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

This year’s keynote address will be presented by Andy Hamilton of the Sept. 11 National Memorial Trail Alliance.

• The American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert will host a 9/11 remembrance at 11 a.m. Thursday, with guest speakers and a light lunch. The Legion is located at 646 Fairground Road. For information, call Ernest Shaver at 570-977-8208.

• Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 will hold its Sept. 11 memorial service at 6 p.m. Thursday at its new Veterans and First Responders Memorial Garden, located on the east end of Catawissa Street, next to the Nesquehoning Hose Company. All are welcome.

Refreshments will be available at the post home on Center Street immediately following the service.

• The Lehighton United Veterans Organization will host a Sept. 11 memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Upper Park Amphitheater in Lehighton.

• The South Ward Playground Association will host a 9/11 memorial service at 6 p.m. Thursday at the playground at Oak and Penn streets in Tamaqua.

Pastor Rob Tomes will offer the opening prayer, and Rodney Clouser and Skye Boyer will perform the national anthem. Micah Gursky will serve as the master of ceremonies. Schuylkill County commissioners Gary Hess and Larry Padora will be on hand, and Corrine Bittner will sing the “Fireman’s Prayer.” Jack Kulp of the Tamaqua American Legion also will participate. Other officials are expected to attend.

This will be the 24th annual 9/11 event at the playground.
