West Penn Township emergency personnel received donations from this summer’s Independence Day celebration at Morgan Park.
Howard Pryda, a pyrotechnics professional who organized the Fourth of July celebration, on Tuesday presented the township police department, fire department and EMS each with a check in the amount of $2,000.
A special thanks was given to local businesses that generously donated to the event and to the local community for their support.
The event served as a fundraiser for the township’s police, fire company and community ambulance.
Boy Scout Tyler Buchman also held a bake sale to raise money for his Eagle Scout project, which was building benches for Morgan Park.
In other business, supervisors:
• Approved $2,342 for new computers for the police department. The new computers will help with the efficiency of the police in performing their duties.
• Adopted an ordinance that increases the yearly rate to $3,145 for incoming supervisors.
• Announced that applications are being accepted to fill an open position for the road department due to the resignation of an employee. Anyone with interest may contact the township office at 570-386-4507.
• Announced that the police department received a chip scanner for stray animals from Starting Over Animal Rescue, which will aid police in reuniting lost and frightened pets with their rightful owner. A special thanks was given to Gloria from Starting Over Animal Rescue for the generous donation.
• Supervisor Glenn Hummel congratulated the police department for a job well done, saying that township crime statistics year to date have shown reductions.
• Announced that the fire department will resume its monthly breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 14 at the West Penn Fire Company firehouse.
• Announced that trick-or-treat night will be held from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 31.
