Craft tent brings a mix of gifts, decor

It’s a treasure trove of wares certain to pique the interests of the most devout craft buyers.

Enter the craft tent at the Palmerton Community Festival, which has been a staple of the event for over 30 years.

Elizabeth Campbell, who is in charge of the crafters in the craft tent, said there will be 28 crafters at this year’s event.

Inside, Campbell said guests can find anything from candy such as freeze dried candy, fudge and homemade candies, to candles, bath salts and homemade soaps.

Additionally, she said there’s a selection of artisan, handcrafted, jewelry, cards, resin key chains, pens, along with accessories from dog bandannas to flannels and hats, coffee cups and hand painted signs for every occasion.

In short, Campbell said they carry a huge selection of all handmade items, and noted that no one can participate unless their items are handmade in some sort of way.

“There is something for every person in the family,” Campbell said. “It’s kid- and family-friendly oriented.”

Campbell said she believes that the community is what makes the craft tent such a special attraction, as it brought artists and crafters together from the community.

“It showed the talents that our very own had to offer,” she said. “It also gave the community a chance to support those individuals by purchasing items that would later become a memory.

“Some of the vendors have been around for 10-20 years, and they become vital to the craft tent. A little kid can visit the tent and buy a tiny trinket to then later on grow up and walk through the tent again and remember having that experience only to pass it on to there very own children.”

Campbell recounted a personal story she has about the craft tent.

“I personally remember growing up, walking through the tent and being in awe of all the things that people could create with their hands and I could not wait to be a part of something that was a special as the festival,” she said. “Now, my very own children have grown up around me being a vendor, and they now sell their own crafts and help run my stand.”

Above all else, Campbell said that crafters become lifelong friends.

“You spend three long days next to your fellow crafters through rain and heat,” she said. “We become so close with each other that we look forward to seeing each other every year.”
