Lehighton Borough Council to hold special meeting Tuesday

Lehighton Borough Council will hold a special meeting on Tuesday.

It will take place at 5 p.m. for the purpose of continued discussion on the upcoming administrative employee vacancies.

Also at that time, borough council is expected to accept the resignation of Councilman John Kreitz, according to the meeting agenda that’s been posted on the borough’s website.

“Since the special meeting was already scheduled, we decided to place the acceptance of that letter of resignation on Tuesday evening,” borough Manager Dane DeWire said. “That way, we have the ability to fill the council vacancy at the regular meeting.”

Borough council’s regular meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 8.

The borough is seeking interested residents to fill a vacancy on borough council brought about by the anticipated resignation of Kreitz.

Letters of interest for the 2025 vacancy must be dropped off at borough hall, or emailed to the borough manager at manager@lehightonborough.org by 4 p.m. Sept. 5.

Whomever borough council appoints at the Sept. 8 meeting will fill the vacancy for the remainder of this year.

To fill the 2026-2027 vacancy, local Democrat and Republican chairpersons will each nominate an individual to be placed on the November ballot for a two-year term.

Residents interested in the 2026-2027 vacancy must contact their party chairperson no later than 2 p.m. Sept. 8 to be considered for the November ballot.

Registered Democrats must reach out to Chairperson Shannon Sotack, at 570-413-9667.

Registered Republicans must reach out to Chairperson Lee Becker at 484-225-8201.

Applicants for each term must be registered voters residing in the borough limits for 12 months on the date of appointment/election.

Kreitz won a seat in the 2023 General Election.

Before that, he previously served on council from 2012-2015.
