Children learn about butterflies at area library

Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary brought the fun recently to Penn Kidder Library, where the kids learned in an interactive way.

It was a full house as the children excitedly chimed in with answers and their butterfly information.

Three-year-old Skylar Sabulsky, who brought her Barbie with a butterfly dress, was excited to “see a pink butterfly,” while 4-year-old Jesse Weiss simply “loves butterflies, they’re so pretty.” Briella Hernandez, age 3, chimed in, “They get to drink on flowers.”

Sarah Rosenberger, who’s been with the butterfly sanctuary for eight years, explained the phases of a butterfly and their eating habits as kids used their fingers to mimic how butterflies fly.

Children listened as she showed pictures and talked about different types of butterflies, including the “blue morpho of Costa Rica, that actually changes colors in flight to look like a flickering light in the sun so no predators can get it.”

Crystal Weiss of Jim Thorpe goes to the library every Wednesday for storytime. She noted, “People here are great and very welcoming and I made great friends here.”

It was a first-time visit for Laura Chase and her 4-year-old twins Stella and Madison and 2-year-old Ray. Chase moved here from Pittsburgh in November and “was trying a new library.”

By the smiling faces and frequent interjections from the kids, it was clear they learned a bit and had fun.

The butterfly sanctuary is located at 18 Church Road, Jim Thorpe, and is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday through Monday, and 2-6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Penn Kidder Library is located at 2588 Route 903 and is open Tuesday and Thursday from noon-6 p.m.; and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
