Tamaqua Borough Council

Tamaqua Borough Council took a number of actions during its Tuesday meeting, including:

• Approved a request to send police Patrolman David Krape to a Taser instructor recertification course in Pottstown at a cost of $895.

• Approved the purchase of five Glock 45 Gen 5 firearms for the police department for $2,455.

• Approved handicapped parking space applications for 27 E. Elm St. and 415 E. Union St.

• Approved a request to have the Tamaqua Police Department and Tamaqua Fire Police assist with the Tamaqua Halloween Parade. The parade will be held on Broad Street beginning at 7 p.m. Oct. 28. The rain date is Oct. 29.

• Appointed Mike McGinley to the Historic Architectural Review Commission.

• Will allow Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet to host an overdose awareness event at Depot Square Park from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 29.

• Learned that a demolition contract for 401 Willing St. was awarded by Schuylkill County to Affordable Construction and Demolition of Coal Township. Funds for the teardown are from a Community Development Block Grant.

• Were advised that CDBG funding will be used to pave portions of Lafayette Street and Hegarty and Glenwood avenues. The county will receive bids until Sept. 10.

• Approved the annual inspection of the Owl Creek dams, which will be done by Alfred Benesch & Co. at a cost of $5,300.

• Approved a request to have no parking on Oak Street between Race and Penn streets for the annual South Ward Playground Association’s Sept. 11 memorial service. The street will be reserved from 5-9 p.m. for firetrucks and other emergency response vehicles.
