Northampton senior paints mural of great-grandparents who founded Becky’s Drive-In
Fans of Becky’s Drive-In can now commemorate the couple who founded the popular drive-in theater nearly eight decades ago.
They can thank a high school student for the public display, a mural that depicts Alice and William “Becky” Beck, founders of the drive-in at 4548 Lehigh Drive, along Route 248 in Walnutport.
Margot Deppe, a senior at Northampton High School, who also attends Bethlehem Area Vo Tech School for commercial art, explained why she decided to paint the portrait of her great-grandparents.
“I was inspired by the artwork already painted on the stand, and wanted to make a lasting contribution while simultaneously paying tribute to my great-grandparents, the founders of the drive-in,” Margot said. “I never met my great-grandparents, but wanted to pay tribute to them,”
Margot, who also takes classes at The Baum School of Art, said she used outdoor acrylic paint and brushes, and added it took roughly a month worth of weekends to complete the mural.
“I think it turned out very nicely, and I hope our patrons like it,” she said.
Cindy Deppe, who along with her sister Mary and brothers Darrell and Dennis, continue to operate the drive-in along with their families, said the family wanted to honor their parents with a painting for their dedication and hard work while owning the drive-in, from 1946-1982.
“We wanted to show our appreciation for all the hard work and dedication they did for the beginning of founding the drive-in in 1946,” Cindy said. “Growing up, they were always working day and night to make sure everything was ready for the movies at night.”
Cindy said the mural is located on the concrete block exterior of the drive-in’s main stand facing Screen 1.
She said the family believes it’s important to showcase their parents at the site where it all began at the then Route 45 Drive-In on June 2, 1946.
“It’s to let our patrons see what they look like, the founders of the drive-in, how they got started,” Cindy said.
