Marian Catholic welcomes students back for 72nd school year

Marian Catholic High School welcomed all its students back Wednesday for the start of the school’s 72nd school year.

More than 240 students from 15 area school districts call Marian home for the current year.

As the 2025-2026 academic year begins, Marian begins with a new era of leadership, facility enhancements and renewed commitment to forming tomorrow’s leaders in the tradition of faith and service.

At the helm this year is the Rev. Robert Finlan, who was recently appointed principal.

A 1986 graduate of the former Cardinal Brennan High School, Finlan brings both a deep personal connection to the region and a passion for Catholic education. He previously served in leadership roles at Bethlehem Catholic, Cardinal Brennan and Holy Name high schools.

“Marian Catholic stands on a firm foundation of faith, tradition and excellence,” Finlan said. “As we welcome students back this year, we do so with gratitude for our rich history and excitement for the future we’re building together — one of innovation, compassion and unwavering purpose.”

Also returning in leadership roles are Jean Susko, entering her 10th year at Marian as director of studies, and Mary Milosh, who has taken on expanded responsibilities as dean of students. She will be joined by JD Hackenberg as assistant to the dean of students. Billy O’Gurek will lead Marian’s athletic programs as athletic director, and the faculty welcomes David Lewis as a new science teacher, Daniel Lisella as a new theology teacher and John Petrilyak as a new physical education teacher.

Enhancements

Marian continues to make strategic investments to ensure students have access to the highest quality facilities and learning environments. Recent years have seen the transformation of the campus, thanks to the generosity of supporters and foundations.

Among the highlights are the Stabler Foundation Science Center, Sonny and Helen Kovatch Chemistry Lab, Anna Marie Rhodunda Velitsky Physics and Engineering Lab, Robert A. Lisella and Frances Hydro Lisella Biology Lab, Jerome and Joan Palko and the Svetz Family Virtual and Robotics Lab, Richard and Kathy Kovatch Reaman Family MakerSpace Lab, Joe and Kathryn Puskar Library and Research Center, Anna H. Morgan Technology and Business Center, John P. Malarkey ’51 Gymnasium and the Dr. and Mrs. William Bonner Chapel of the Immaculate Conception.

Updates completed and planned for the new year include newly remodeled student bathrooms, freshly painted hallways and offices, improved wireless connectivity, enhanced security with new classroom doors, new safety railings in the Men of Marian Stadium and welcoming outdoor features like benches and banners that celebrate the Marian spirit and pride.

Marian will host its first open house for prospective students and families on Oct. 25. This is an opportunity to experience Marian firsthand and explore the educational and faith-based programs the school offers.
