August 25, 1935 — Coaldale’s Johnny “Gid” Gildea kicks a 36-yard field goal with only 30 seconds left to play to break a scoreless tie and lift the newest members of the Pittsburgh Pirates (who will eventually become the Steelers) to a 3-0 victory over the team’s veterans in an exhibition contest. Gildea was written about in the Pittsburgh Press after the contest with the excerpt reading, “A find, so owner Art Rooney and Coach (Joe) Bach believe, was taken on in the person of Johnny Gildea, triple-threat left halfback who played his collegiate football at St. Bonaventure’s. Gildea carries 198 pounds on his 6-foot, 1 -inch frame and can get over the ground with neatness and dispatch.”
