Creative flair transforms ‘junk’ into fair-themed entries
Give a kid a “junk bucket” and you’d be surprised how much creativity will come out.
Twelve buckets full of various items including hangers, pictures, buttons, toilet paper rolls, silverware and paints were given to contestants for the West End Fair junk bucket competition.
Contestants were broken down into groups by age, junior 4-H and an “open” category for anyone. It was an opportunity to learn about recycling and upcycling.
Angela Schwartz of Kresgeville chose to use a colorful picture of a girl swinging on a tree branch as her inspiration. Painted folded paper was used as the umbrella with a toilet paper roll body and a bent hanger for arms and legs.
The different things each child came up with showed an impressive range of ideas. All projects were three dimensional and fair related.
E. Bedo of East Stroudsburg was clever enough to use the actual bucket, as the body of a cow, as part of the project. Pink buttons were used for the snouts. Three little pigs sat safely under their mother.
Bedo included a note stating: “This is the three little pigs and their mother, 1 boy and 2 girls, at the fair. They are happy to be at the fair.”
Another entry included a serving tray with a sandwich, cookie and drink made from paper, toilet paper rolls, buttons and lots of creativity.
A steam locomotive, the “West End Fair Limited,” was made by Julius Greening of Stroudsburg.
Kelly Camilo of Saylorsburg made a sparkling fair scene with a crown covered in fireworks. A box office with “admit one” tickets sat in front.
First place went to Colleen Stipeck of Effort for her creation of a Ferris wheel, a staple at the fair. A tree and the fair gate sit in the forefront.
