Railroad plans work in Tamaqua

The Reading & Northern Railroad plans to replace the Greenwood Street crossing in Tamaqua next month, according to Jay Stidham, Tamaqua’s director of public works.

“So the week of Sept. 15, Greenwood Street and Hazle Street will be closed for the railroad to tear the crossing out and put it back in,” Stidham told Tamaqua Borough Council this week.

Stidham said that he will keep council and the public updated with the plans.

And on the week of Sept. 22, Stidham said borough workers will pave Hazle Street.

“Sections of Hazle Street will be blocked off,” he said. There will also be no parking on the street since it will be closed for the project.

Also on West Cottage Avenue, and Hazle and Greenwood streets, Stidham said the Tamaqua Water Authority is planning to have a contractor do some boring, or drilling, work underneath the railroad tracks.

The work will likely cause some temporary road closures.

“I just want to make everybody aware,” Stidham said. “As it closer, I will get something out (to notify residents).”
