Carbon County probation officer resigns

Carbon County’s chief adult probation officer resigned on Wednesday.

Janene Holter of Tamaqua is stepping away from the position she took in April 2024.

The resignation was noted in the personnel report during Thursday’s Carbon County Commissioners meeting.

“That position falls under the jurisdiction of the courts,” Commissioner Chairman Mike Sofranko said. “It is a personnel matter.”

Kelly Hamm, district court administrator, said she, along with probation officers Joseph Bettine and Kimberly Cooper would work together in the running of the office until President Judge Roger Nanovic selects a new adult probation chief.

Holter replaced Matthew J. Kimmel of Lehighton, who retired from the position Feb. 2 after serving as the chief for just under two years.

A graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, Holter worked for 25 years in the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General before taking the adult probation position.
