Liberty Tree planting set for Sept. 14 in Tamaqua
A tree that descended from the last remaining “Liberty Tree” will begin to take root in Tamaqua next month.
Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt told Tamaqua Borough Council Tuesday that the tree will be planted at 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at a new park reserved just for it.
Liberty Tree Park is on the unit block of North Railroad Street.
“They’ll have a tree planting ceremony,” Steigerwalt said, noting that state, county and local officials will be on hand.
The sapling will come from the America250PA’s Liberty Tree Project, which is meant to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday.
The project is awarding one tree to each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties through a competitive process. Liberty trees were used as symbolic meeting places for the “Sons of Liberty” in the years leading up to the American Revolution.
The tree heading to Tamaqua is a descendant of the last remaining tree in Annapolis, Maryland.
The Tamaqua Area Community Partnership and Tamaqua SOS (Save Our Station) acquired and demolished blighted properties at 31 and 39 N. North Railroad Street to make way for the park. Those properties were demolished earlier this year and the land was turned over to the borough.
Tamaqua also owns 33-37 N. Railroad St., so the park will span between 31-39 N. Railroad St.
“It’s a work in progress but we will turn it into something respectable,” Steigerwalt said.
He noted that the park’s creation is being funded through donations.
“We don’t have grant funding or anything like that,” Steigerwalt said, referring to the borough.
Tamaqua Mayor Nathan Gerace said it is an honor for the borough to receive a tree.
“I think it’s important to mention how special this is for Tamaqua,” Gerace said.
