Boil water advisory lifted in Jim Thorpe

A boil water advisory has been lifted for residents in the Heights section of Jim Thorpe Borough, officials announced late Tuesday afternoon.

A water main break prompted the advisory last week, potentially affecting more than 700 residents.

“All breaks have been fixed,” Borough Manager Maureen Sterner said Tuesday morning. “We are awaiting the results of the water testing right now.”

A formal warning was issued to residents on Aug. 14. The notice stated that the borough “experienced a loss of positive water pressure due to a main break.” It explained that such a loss can allow contamination to enter the system.

“As a result, there is an increased chance that the water may contain disease-causing organisms,” the notice said.

The incident, according to the borough, happened during excavation work for a new water main on Center Avenue.

“Contractors hit a service line and an old main,” the borough said in the notice. “The break was significant and the tanks that feed the Heights were shut down to control the water. This caused a loss of pressure in the system. The repair was made and the tanks have been returned to service. Water samples have been taken, and when all is safe, you will receive a notice that the issue has been corrected.”

Jim Thorpe followed up with a Facebook post Friday.

“At this time, a boil water advisory is still in effect,” the post said. “We apologize for any inconvenience. Keeping residents’ water safe is very important to us.”

Sterner said the boil water advisory covered the entire Heights section, about 711 residents, though the breaks occurred specifically in the 500 block of Center Avenue.
