August 18, 1990 — Lehighton native and Bethlehem resident David Arner captures first place in the annual Philip Ginder Memorial 5-Mile Run. The event is hosted by the Summit Hill Recreation Commission and is run through the borough streets. Arner completes the course in 26:55 to win the race for the fourth consecutive year. While his time is slower than previous years, he attributes that to the humidity at the 6:30 p.m. start but also states, “I like running up here.” Lehighton’s John Huntington takes second, while Coaldale’s Ray Ziegenfuss Jr. ends in third. The top female runner is Mahanoy Area student Dana Teno.
