August 15, 1979 — Scott Kmetz pitches a three-hitter to help Jim Thorpe gain a 4-1 victory over Nesquehoning in the Panther Valley Little League tournament. Kmetz allows a first-inning run on Dave Ligenza’s fielder’s choice grounder but keeps the Nesquers off the board the rest of the way. Kmetz, who walks one and strikes out 12, also produces offensively with a triple and a two-run double. Gary Heydt chips in with a hit and a run for Thorpe, managed by Jimmy Strubinger, while Kenny Snerr contributes an RBI single. Pat Large also adds an RBI with a bases-loaded walk.
